If the season where to end today this is how everything would shake out. Both Indianapolis Colts and the San Diego Chargers would receive a bye in the AFC. The Denver Broncos and New England Patriots would match up and the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals would play wild card weekend. On the NFC side both the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings would earn a bye. The Dallas Cowboys would match up against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers would face the Arizona Cardinals.

With a ton of 7-7 teams in the AFC and a very close NFC the only thing for certain is it should be an awesome finish to the NFL season.

I’m sure everyone watching the game last night noticed the friction between Brett Favre and coach Brad Childress. After watching Favre gets hammered in a less than vital matchup against the Carolina Panthers Childress decided to give his star the hook. I guess Favre had other plans. The two visibly argued when Childress tried to play coach. Favre ultimately got his way and continued to get his bell rung in the loss to the Panthers.

I wouldn’t think this would harm the Minnesota Viking playoff hopes but if Favre instead of Childress is running the Vikings who knows what the month of January will bring. If your planning on putting money on the Vikings I would watch this situation.

If every drunken football fan looked this good misbehaving there would be no need for a fan conduct code. Unfortunately, the majority of the drunken idiots at fault are far less attractive.

Oh behave! If you continue to double-fist your way from the beer stands to your seat through four quarters of football, getting hammered and making a complete ass of yourself in front of hard-working folks and families who paid good money to see their team play, then it’s going to cost you. Actually, it will become the club’s responsibility to ensure their fans aren’t getting violent in the stands and if anyone is caught violating that policy the team will be fined. (You really don’t want your team’s number-one linebacker escorting you out of the stadium, do you?) Here’s the deal: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell issued a fan conduct policy on Thursday that will come into effect at the start of the upcoming NFL pre-season.

“We want everyone to be able to come to our stadiums, behave properly, enjoy this experience but don’t ruin it for others,” said Goodell. “We will be focusing on that, including the implementation of an NFL fan conduct policy which we will have out prior to the season.”

What does that mean? It means no more stabbings, no more beatings, no more bare-breasted strip acts…essentially no more idiotic behavior. Face painting is still a go, but face pulverizing is a big no.

That leaves plenty of fun to be had in the sportsbooks, where NFL Super Bowl odds are getting ripe as we speak!

Former 49er, Justin Smiley and the Miami Dolphins have agreed on a five-year contract worth $25 million according to the Miami Herald. This deal includes a guarantee of $9 million.

In November Smiley dislocated his right shoulder and underwent surgery that he is still recovering from. Currently, the Dolphins have penciled Smiley in as their starting right guard and before he gets in he’ll have to pass a physical.

Its most likely Smiley will be limited in off-season minicamps. Its still not know at what stage in training Smiley will be ready but it’s easy to assume that the Dolphins have a sense he’ll be good to go early enough to make a difference.

There’s hope for Western civilization after all. The voting public appears ready to support politicians with ethical substance, and the betting public has likewise turned its back on the New England Patriots.

The Pats have become the NFL’s version of the Evil Empire, joining the New York Yankees and the Duke Blue Devils among the most hated teams in North American sports. An Empire because of all those championships; Evil because of the controversy surrounding Spygate, which the New York Times recently dealt with in a refreshingly intelligent manner.

The problem isn’t that the Patriots apparently stole signals from the New York Jets last September. That’s legal. The problem is that they did it effectively, using video technology to record activity on the Jets sideline for further analysis. This falls into what ethicists call a “gray area,” doing something that is technically allowable yet violates the spirit of the rules. It’s not illegal, but it’s cheating just the same.

You’re going to see it mentioned time and again this week. I was among the many who got burned last year picking the home team in the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs. They were 0-4 ATS.

I certainly won’t be shying away from taking the home side in the two AFC Divisional games this weekend. These are two of the best teams ever assembled: the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts. They are so good that I have no problem taking New England (-13) over Jacksonville and Indianapolis (-9) over San Diego.

The bye week is the reason home teams (last year notwithstanding) have traditionally done well in this round. It’s going to be of particular use to the Colts, who had a number of nagging injuries on offense and needed the rest. And it’ll be very difficult indeed to out-coach Bill Belichick and Tony Dungy when they’ve had an extra week to prepare.

New York Giants at Tampa Bay Bucs: O-line vs. D-line? That one’s easy: New York Giants. The Bucs allowed a lot of sacks during the regular season and don’t even get me started about the crappy division they were in. That’s not to say that QB Jeff Garcia doesn’t have it in him to win this one for the fans back in Tampa Bay, but it takes more than one man to win a football game. And that’s why the Giants will win. Eli Manning may be inconsistent but as a team these guys play so well together. When it matters most the Giants will stand tall and triumph over Tampa.

Washington Red Skins at Seattle Seahawks: The Washington Red Skins have been on fire as of late but can they keep things going when the going gets tough? Because (if you’ve never been to Qwest Field, and I have!) it’s going to get tough. And damn loud. That whole “12th Man” thing is TRUE, especially when it comes to the playoffs in Seattle. Sleepless or not, the Seahawks are going to be a force to be reckoned with this weekend. And what about Todd Collins for the Red Skins? Let’s see what he’s got. Bring it on, boy!

Tennessee Titans at San Diego Chargers: The Chargers are the team to beat in this matchup. LaDainian Tomlinson, Philip Rivers…these guys are hot. But it just might come down to the team most willing to get down and dirty to win. And that honors, I’m afraid, goes to the Tennessee Titans. Vince Young isn’t playing at his healthiest but something tells me he’s going to leave it all on the field for the team and his coach. Let’s hope the Chargers are just as hungry for the W.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Pittsburgh Steelers: The Jags are the slight favorite to win this game and that’s saying a lot considering that this one is being played in Pittsburgh. Steelers fans are NOT going to make it easy on the visiting team to walk in and win this one on their turf. No bloody way. And if you were to ask Ben Roethlisberger what his thoughts were going into this big matchup he’d probably say something like, “Grrrr…!!!” He’s a man of few words. And he can get the job done.

Stay tuned for a wrap-up report of this Wild Card Weekend once all is said and done…

It’s been quite a season for the New England Patriots, hasn’t it? A perfect season, a handful of records and now QB Tom Brady has been chosen as the NFL’s Most Valuable Player, as voted by the Associated Press.

Brady picked up 49 of the 50 votes from a nationwide media panel that regularly covers the NFL. The only other vote went to Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre..

In leading the Patriots to the NFL’s first undefeated regular season in 35 years, Brady was amazingly focused and it was clear that he had only one goal in mind: to win. He led the NFL with a passer rating of 117.2, a completion percentage of 68.9 and 4,806 yards, while also setting a league record with 50 touchdown passes.

This makes Brady the first Patriot to earn the MVP award. San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson won the award last year.

BTW, the New England Patriots are the heavy, heavy favorites to win the 2008 Super Bowl by 1/2 odds.

We’ll all be looking back on those years Brett Favre spent in a Green Bay Packers uniform as a bygone era. It was announced today that the legendary quarterback, who spent a few brief months enjoying his retirement from the NFL, has been traded to the New York Jets.

“We’re going to take this one year at a time,” Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said. “We’re excited to have Brett on the team this year.”

Favre will be wearing the No. 4 jersey for the Jets and apparently the item is already a hot-seller on eBay. As far as the Packers organization goes, well…they have to be relieved.

“Brett has had a long and storied career in Green Bay, and the Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished,” the Packers said in a press release. “It is with some sadness that we make this announcement, but also with the desire for certainty that will allow us to move the team and organization forward in the most positive way possible.”

So…are you going to draft Favre on your fantasy football league?
